I am a Canadian non-fiction photographer, writer, documentary filmmaker, artist and educator based in the Greater Toronto Area.
Growing up within eyeshot of the Georgina Island reserve— a small, hard place of relegation for the indigenous Chippewa peoples whose vast tracts of land my ancestors helped "settle"—I was instilled early with a biting awareness of the complicated co-history of indigenous and non-indigenous occupants of "Turtle Island". As such my heritage has significantly informed my practice.
After completing two degrees at Queen’s University (BA Sociology with Distinction, B.Ed), I freelanced to the Kingston Whig Standard until the mid 1980s before launching my magazine career covering the Boston Marathon for TIME. Since then, I've worked on assignments in the Americas and Asia for many of the planet's news, geographical and business editorial publications. From 1995 to 1999 I was the official portraitist to Their Excellencies Romeo LeBlanc and Diana Fowler LeBlanc, Office of the Governor General of Canada. Meanwhile my work has been exhibited throughout Canada and collected by the National Gallery of Canada.
Over the years I received honours from: The Art Director’s Club (New York), The Alexia Foundation for World Peace, The Advertising and Design Club of Canada, The National Magazine Awards and The Canada Council for the Arts, and the Critical Mass short list, among others.
In 2015/16 I have been returning to this field after a temporary hiatus of several years in fulltime filmmaking and teaching.
Today, with batteries charged, bags packed, passport renewed, I am standing by for your next assignment.Throughout and continuing, selections of my images are represented by REDUX Pictures in New York City as well as in my online archive.
